How Do You Feed a Herbivore in a Dwarf Fortress? [Explained]

How to Feed Animals in Dwarf Fortress

It’s easier said than done in the game to feed the animals. You’ll note that we just included herbivores and left out carnivores. It is because carnivore animals may sustain themselves automatically by using the Eggs and Meats in your Stockpile. But in order to survive, the herbivores depend on your help. In Dwarf Fortress, you can feed herbivore animals by putting them on a pasture. Here are a few quick actions to take:

Look for the Pen/Pasture option under the Zone menu.
Put the Pasture in a vacant area.
Decide which animals to add to the pasture.
Make sure your stockpile has enough grass and other foods that grazers would eat after setting up the pasture. Recognize that some herbivores might necessitate a larger pasture. Consider an elephant, rhinoceros, or water buffalo as examples. Due to a lack of grass, keeping too many huge animals in one pasture might result in hunger. To better accommodate the size and hunger of the various herbivores, try modifying your pastures.

You don’t need to know anything else about feeding animals in Dwarf Fortress.
